Academic Plus Equestrian Programme

Academic Plus students Bruna and JoBruna and Jo testing the water in 2013
Kate’s Riding Centre welcomes students from Kerikeri High School’s International School to attend the Academic Plus Equestrian Programme.

The course each student takes is dependent on the ability level they bring. However, the facilities at Kate’s Riding Centre mean that students will be able to develop their skills in a broad range of equestrian aspects from grooming and groundwork to dressage, show jumping and cross country.

For more information about the horsemanship philosophy used at Kate's see our Holistic Info page.

The Programme
The programme is carried out on the Friday of eight weeks of term and activities focus on the level of the rider. On the first lesson we assess each student's capabilities to set them on a course for the term.

For beginner riders, we start with the basics: safety, parts of the horse, and equipment used. Once riders are mounted they start with the basics of riding: using reins, the aids, long rein and gaining contact, control, and so on.

For experienced riders we aim to do as much riding as possible. Usually this consists of flatwork (dressage) in the morning and show jumping in the afternoon.

All levels participate in regular rides on the farm where we make use of water features. For advanced students we offer cross country schooling using our excellent cross country facilities.

We are looking at putting together a 'mini-camp' over one weekend of term to immerse students in the culture where they stay at Kate's Riding Centre for two to three days.

The atmosphere at Kate's Riding Centre is relaxed and students are welcomed to join in with activities taking place and learn about different aspects of horsemanship. We currently have a beautiful young stallion that is being started ('broken in') and handled regularly, and coaching for the local Special Olympics team also takes place on a Friday. Sometimes experienced riders can help 'bring in a herd' - a wonderful experience unlikely to be found at most riding establishments. With a large number of horses to school, our Working Students are always busy and their is always more riding to be done!

Visit the Kerikeri High School International webpage for more information about how international students can attend the local high school for a half year or year.

Instructors
Classes are held by Kate Hewlett, Tim Featherstone and Kate’s staff, as required.
